Although Salvatore (Blackie) Aleccia was a devout hoodlum through and through, he and his wife were, nonetheless, well-liked and widely accepted in their Endicott neighborhood.
In fact, Mrs. Aleccia served dutifully in many philanthropic organizations and worthy causes over the years. She was a longtime member of the local PTA, charity programs connected to Saint Anthony of Padua R.C. Church, The Endicott Club, and The Red Cross.
“Blackie” himself was also close to their church. For many years, dating back to the 1940s, he was also a valued member of the St. Anthony of Padua Bowling League. Both he and his wife were known to involve themselves in many local neighborhood activities.
Through the years, “Blackie,” as he was commonly referred to by his fellow underworld associates, was known as a strong-arm man and enforcer for the local underworld.
He also engaged in a wide variety of other illegal activities which included policy-numbers and lottery rackets, bookmaking, jukebox and vending machine rackets, and extortion.
