John (Candy) Candelmo was a soldier in the Rhode Island faction of the Patriarca Family. A bodyguard and aide to Raymond Patriarca, he was a daily visitor to the boss’s Coin-O-Matic Distributors, Inc.. Candelmo’s police record started in 1922, with arrests for holdup, burglary, breaking and entering, murder, possession of guns and narcotics.
He was a known strong-arm enforcer. Active in Providence, he also engaged in burglary, heists, extortion, murder, and fencing stolen goods. Candelmo was also suspected of having handled narcotics distribution at one point. He held ownership in the Federal Dairy Co. and a commercial property in Providence.
