Active as a rackets guy since the early 1920s, Gyp DeCarlo was a liquor bootlegger in his youth. He was also well-known as an enforcer of mob edicts. DeCarlo was overheard on an early 1960s wiretap reminiscing about being formally inducted into the Luciano Family since 1947.
Gyp was a highly-respected member who became a longtime “capo di decina” in Vito Genovese’s crew. He was said to have been very loyal to Vito, and one of his top bosses for the state of New Jersey.
In the early 1960s, it was exposed that Gyp was among several mob powers in the northern New Jersey area who had his hand in the controlled bribery and public corruption for the mob to keep their underworld operations running smoothly and investigation-free.
