Gyp DeCarlo was a Genovese Crime Family capo who mainly operated out of New Jersey. His specialty was the bribery and corruption of public officials, including top politicians and law enforcement figures in the state.
DeCarlo was also allegedly very instrumental in the backing of the careers of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons and was also said to have had an early hand in promoting the famed crooner Jimmy Roselli.
Plus he was the recipient of a controversial presidential pardon from Richard Nixon in 1972.
Angelo (Gyp) DeCarlo – aka “Gyp the Blood,” “Ray,” and “Raymond” – was born in 1902 in Hoboken, New Jersey. He was raised and would operate all his life within that state. His known residence was on Route 22 in the Mountainside area.

Gyp stood a stout 5-foot 7-inches tall and weighed 230-pounds. He had grey-white hair and a chubby face. He was married two times and had three children.

Active as a racket guy since the early 1920s, DeCarlo was a liquor bootlegger in his youth. He was also well-known as an enforcer of mob edicts.
