Gaspare (Fats) Aiello was a trusted associate of many top mafiosi in Youngstown, Ohio , including Sandy Naples and Cadillac Charlie Cavallaro.

And while he was active in the gambling rackets , gambling also became his vice and a few other things - as you'll find out in this mobster snapshot.

Gaspare (Fats) Aiello - aka “Jasper,” “Joe Fats,” “Joseph Aiello,” and “Gasparo Aiello” (TN) - was born to Antonio and Giuseppina (nee’ Lusso) Aiello on August 9, 1913, in St. Louis, Missouri.

As an adult, Aeillo later relocated to Youngstown, Ohio. He established himself there and then met and married his wife Rose.

They moved into a little apartment at 26 Four Mile Run Avenue in Youngstown. He and Rose later moved again to 4465 Woodridge Drive in Austintown (also in the Youngstown area.)

Aiello was also notorious for “keeping” a string of girlfriends that he housed in various rented apartments he paid for around town.

He is described as being slender at 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing 135 pounds, with a dark olive complexion, brown hair, and eyes.

Fats was known as a “bon vivant” and “Broadway Johnny"-type hoodlum who reveled in the nightlife, gambling tables, and loose women.

Fats Aiello Around Town

Aiello quickly assimilated into the local underworld and became a trusted associate of such top mafiosi as Youngstown’s Calogero (Cadillac Charlie) Cavallaro, Joseph (Joe the Wolf) Di Carlo , Calogero (Charlie) Vizzini, Mariano (Marino) Paolacci, Santino (Sandy Naples) DiNapoli, and James (Two-Gun Jimmy) Prato.

Two more close contacts were said to have been Cleveland soldier Anthony (Tony the Dope) Delsanter and former Cleveland boss Alfred (Big Al) Polizzi who was described as a distant cousin to Aiello.

Aiello had a lengthy criminal record dating back to 1932 for Federal Liquor Law Violations, burglary, grand larceny, carrying concealed weapons, assault, shooting with intent to kill, criminally receiving stolen property, and issuing a fraudulent check.

He generally hung around and frequented the various illegal gambling parlors in the Youngstown area where he was, more often than not, a partner in these games.

In fact, he was a known gambler and listed as a “KG” by the Youngstown Police Department .

He was said to have a piece of the A Lounge, a notorious illicit gambling den where high-stakes dice and card games were held nightly.

Don't Get in Debt with the Mob

But he was also known as a degenerate gambler himself who, at one point in time, was alleged to have blown approximately $500,000 of the mob’s money gambling on the Greek dice game barbut.

He became deeply indebted to the borgata and had to be replaced as the overseer of the game because of his instability and degenerate gambling habit.

His life was spared only by the virtue of the fact that Aiello was married to Cleveland underboss Jack (Jack White) Licavoli’s sister.

Otherwise, he most likely would have ended up in a ditch somewhere or inside a car trunk for his indiscretion.

On the legitimate side of things, Aiello operated the National Cigarette Service Co., a cigarette-vending machine distributor located at 15 Oak Hill Avenue in Youngstown in partnership with Anthony (Tony Dell) Dellassandro.

Law enforcement authorities and informants both described “Fats” Aiello as the one-time main “contact man” for various mobsters and racketeers visiting Youngstown.

Reportedly, before his fall from grace, Aiello had been installed as a top overseer of the area rackets by Cleveland underboss Jack (Jack White) Licavoli himself.
