Joseph Zummo was a member of the Bonanno Family's "rebel camp" aligned with Frank Mari during the Banana War of the 1960s. Joseph Zummo was born in 1930 in Brooklyn (possibly Ridgewood.) By the 1960s, he had relocated out to 15 Frederick Ave. in Bayshore in Suffolk County. He was the brother of Thomas Zummo, reportedly one of the last casualties in the “Banana War” of the 1960s. Zummo was alleged to be an enforcer for rebel faction leader Frank Mari and was shot to death in the lobby of a Queens apartment house in early 1969 by two assailants. We now know that it was a personal killing committed by future Bonanno Boss Joseph Massino for reasons unrelated to the war. Thomas Zummo First identified by Suffolk Rackets Squad investigators while probing the Bonanno war, Joseph Zummo was said to be in the Paul Sciacca “rebel camp” against Joe Bonanno and his son Bill. Like his brother Tommy, Joseph aligned under Mari. Employed as a “car salesman” at a dealership in Bayshore, Joseph Zummo specialized in organized auto theft rings and gambling. His arrest includes grand larceny (five times) and criminally receiving stolen property (automobiles.) He was convicted on grand larceny counts, but the penalty is undetermined. It seems that after his brother's murder, Joseph Zummo avoided any interaction with the underworld. No more was heard from him and no dod was available. Until next time..."The Other Guy!"
