Lazarus was most often identified by both local and federal authorities as a large-scale bookmaker who accepted bets on both horse races and sporting events.
He was a major underworld player which was clearly evidenced by the fact that, over the years, he was tied into numerous probes that spanned the entire country, including the mysterious disappearance and presumed murder of another top New York City bookie.
