The Deadly Angelo Yale: Frankie’s Kid Brother

Angelo Yale was the kid brother of the infamous gangster Frankie Yale — South Brooklyn’s most notorious Camorra leader. But despite Frankie’s well-deserved reputation as a ferocious and deadly gangster — it's no exaggeration to say that Angelo made his legendary older brother almost look like an altar boy. This is Angelo’s life story!

Angelo (Angelo Yale) Ioele -- aka The Angel and Angelo Uale -- was born in the little town of Longobucco (Cosenza Province), Calabria, Italy, in 1903. (An alternate dob is 1898, but the exact day is unavailable for either year.)

Angelo was the youngest of four children born to parents Domenico Carmine Ioele and Isabella DeSimone. His two older brothers were named Giovanni and Francesco. Their sister was named Assunta, who everyone called Susan.

Domenico was 52, and Isabella was 45 when Angelo was born. His brother Frankie was 10.

The oldest Ioele brother, Giovanni, was born in 1892. Francesco was born a year later, in 1893. Assunta came along two years later, in 1895.

By 1907, Domenico and Isabella decided to relocate the family and immigrate to America. Little Angelo was only 4 years old at the time.

Upon arriving at Ellis Island, the family quickly made their way to Kings County, where friends and family from their beloved region of Calabria had already settled. Thereafter, the borough of Brooklyn would be where Domenico and Isabella would set down permanent roots for their growing family.

And although their two older boys had already aged out from school, their two younger children -- Assunta and Angelo -- would attend class within New York City’s public school system. But, admittedly, following his brother Frankie’s lead, young Angelo probably didn’t have his head focused on reading, writing, and arithmetic.

Both brothers appear to have had the propensity to apply their considerable criminal skills, guile, and aptitude elsewhere.

Frankie Yale

By the late 1910s, Angelo’s older brother Francesco was already becoming famous, or, more appropriately, infamous as “ Frankie Yale” -- Brooklyn’s most notorious Camorra boss .

And in short order, Angelo joined him as soon as he came of age, creating the “Yale Brothers” faction of the Brooklyn underworld.

In the coming decades, Frankie and Angelo’s criminal exploits would be such that they’d forever carve out a name for themselves within the annals of American organized crime history.

Coming of Age

All evidence suggests that Angelo was a wild and unruly youth from the start. This became even more apparent over the years as he unapologetically involved himself in countless acts of deception, crime, and unrestrained street violence.

But through it all, despite his propensity for street life, Angelo also seemed to find the time required to court and date various local girls around the neighborhood. He appears to have been something of a gigolo.

One young lady, in particular, seems to eventually have drawn his undivided attention -- at least for the time being -- winning over Angelo’s heart, if one can call it that.

Angelo and Jennie Yale

Subsequently, on July 31, 1919, after a short courtship, young Angelo took an 18-year-old local girl named Concetta “Jennie” Piccirello as his bride to start their life together.

Side Note: At the time of their marriage, Angelo was only 16 years old, but on the marriage certificate, he declared his age as 21. Since his bride was reportedly two years older than him, it’s believed Angelo misstated his age on purpose to appear older. The young gangster-in-training also may have lied to Jennie about his age to win a date with her.

It’s believed that she and Angelo may have been childhood sweethearts. The young couple eventually had three children together: two daughters, Eleanor and Louise. Eleanor was born in 1920, followed by Louise in 1923. There is some indication they may have had a third child, but no specific evidence confirms this.

The Yale family initially lived at 4911 Third Avenue, Brooklyn. Still, because of the precarious nature of Angelo’s business and his ever-changing circumstances, he and his wife and kids moved around a lot.

A Rocky Marriage

It also appears that their marriage was anything but stable and happy over the years. After all, how could it be? During those formative early years they were together, Angelo was either constantly in the streets hustling a living, being arrested, locked up, serving jail time, or “on the lam” from the police authorities who were out looking for him.

Coupled with whatever personal dynamics took place between them, it seems the sparks were always flying.

By at least the late-1920s, it appears their marriage was entirely on the rocks. Hard evidence of this turmoil would become public some years later when Angelo’s wife took their kids and left him, eventually filing for divorce.

By 1930, if they were even living as man and wife at the time, and in theory, technically under the same roof, Angelo was already out of the family home, living on his own and bouncing around with other women.

On May 30, 1930, Angelo was in civil court, testifying in the New York State Supreme Court after being subpoenaed. Jennie had filed for divorce and was seeking weekly alimony to support their two children.

Justice John B. Johnson, the judge hearing the case, repeatedly questioned Yale regarding his finances and disposition. But it seems Angelo was so uncooperative, either by design or happenstance, that the frustrated jurist eventually admonished the gangster from the bench, saying, “You certainly are stupid!”

Judge Johnson continued, “Mr. Yale, your wits seem to have deserted you. And if you’re being honest and not kidding, it’s easy to understand why you haven’t inherited the mantle of your deceased brother.”

Jennie filed for divorce after several relatives told her they’d seen Angelo “shacking up” with some unidentified “moll” at Coney Island’s Sagamore Hotel.

Angelo attempted to convey to Judge Johnson that he was okay with the divorce but seemed to struggle with articulating that simple point.

It seems our boy Angelo couldn’t keep his "yes" and "no" answers straight, frustrating the judge to the point of lashing out at him.

Finally, the exasperated judge cut to the chase: "What’s the bottom line here? Are you willing to pay your wife the $20 weekly alimony she’s seeking for your two children? Yes or no?"

'Okay,' Angelo replied flatly. With that, he hopped off the witness stand, and that was that!

Bouncing Around

In early 1930, Yale was already living at 6509 Fourteenth Avenue. Only a few months later, he listed his home address as 2828 W. 19th Street. Towards the end of that same year, he had once again relocated; this time, it was to 2648 Ocean Parkway, Brooklyn.

Then, less than one year after that, in late 1931, Angelo listed his residence as 1407 Sixty-Sixth Street in the nearby Bath Beach section.

Earlier in 1931 -- less than a decade after getting married -- the former Mrs. Yale, who had since reverted back to her maiden name of Jennie Piccirello, got married once again to Archie Skelton.

Around the same time, Angelo tied the knot again, this time with Catherine Della-Pesca Prestia. Unlike his first marriage, he made sure to marry someone younger—Catherine, born in 1912, was nine years his junior.

By 1932, already legally divorced and remarried, Yale and his new bride lived at 122 Ryerson Avenue. But by 1933, they were residing at 1409 Sixty-Sixth Street, Brooklyn. Two years later, Angelo had moved several blocks over to 1312 Sixty-Eighth Street, Brooklyn.

It's debatable whether he and Catherine were still together by this time. They may not have been.

The Brothers Yale -- Very Ambitions Fellas

Early on, as Frankie was first establishing his underworld credentials and coming into power, he went into the funeral parlor business with a friend of his named Raffaele (Ralph) Uliano, a licensed mortician.

Coincidentally, Uliano lived at 6604 Fourteenth Avenue, conveniently located on the same block as the funeral parlor, just a few doors down from the business.

As a full partner, Frank wisely applied for his own mortician's license, and together, the two associates established the funeral home as Uliano & Yale Undertakers.

And although he may have heavily relied on his partner for the day-to-day maintenance and functioning of the parlor, Frankie was not just a silent partner in the firm. He was also known to take an active interest as an owner-operator, along with Ralph.

From all accounts, Frankie and Ralph appear to have made a good partnership because their mortuary business seems to have been very successful; they remained in business for many years.

Even after Frankie's death, the business continued and thrived for quite some time under the guidance of Ralph and Angelo, who had acquired his brother’s interest in the company by then.

Coney Island, Brooklyn

After all -- truth be told -- during those early years in Brooklyn, there was no shortage of corpses needing embalming services. Whether by luck or clever planning, the Yale brothers had chosen the perfect business to complement their "other" line of work.

Side Note: Several years after assuming ownership of his brother’s funeral parlor interest, Angelo ran into a little glitch with his undertaker's license. Upon checking the background of their applicant, the NYC Board of Health revoked his license after discovering that Angelo possessed a lengthy criminal record, including being arrested on at least eight separate occasions for such serious offenses as kidnapping, felonious assault, carrying concealed weapons, and murder. The authorities announced that under a section of the sanitary code providing for “the good moral character of anyone engaged in the business of undertaking,” the Board of Health suspended and then permanently revoked Angelo's license.

During those early years, as Frankie gained underworld influence over his territory, he and his men held sway over much of the illicit rackets along the South Brooklyn piers and waterfront.

This might explain why Angelo spent some time working as a longshoreman. Frankie likely put him there to earn a living while keeping an eye on Frankie’s financial and racket interests.

But of all the various businesses and other interests, the Yale brothers would ever be synonymous with, The Harvard Inn was undoubtedly the most notorious.

Through the years, the Harvard Inn, located along the surf and boardwalk in Brooklyn served as the headquarters for Frankie Yale and his Camorra gang .

And although this notorious watering hole was generally known as Frankie’s place, there are reports that Angelo also held an interest in the business.

This location became the home base and major hangout and watering hole for the “Yale Gang,” as well as a key location from which they planned future activities.

Although members of their gang would eventually expand their operations into Lower Manhattan and Queens Counties, the gang’s stronghold was always centered around Brooklyn, with the Coney Island, Bath Beach, Bensonhurst, Bay Ridge, and Sunset Park sections of the borough their primary stomping grounds.

Side Note: The Harvard Inn was also reputed to have been where a young hoodlum named Alfonso Caponi -- who would later become infamous worldwide as “Scarface Al Capone” -- had first gotten his start in the rackets. But that’s a story for another day.

The Roaring Twenties

Working in unison with Frankie over the years, Angelo became deeply enmeshed in various organized rackets during his long career in the underworld.

These included such mob staples as untaxed liquor bootlegging, cargo and truck hijacking , policy numbers, the Italian lottery, card and dice games and other forms of gambling, strong-arm extortion, contract murder, counterfeiting, “protection” rackets, loft burglaries and armed thefts, the receiving and fencing stolen goods, and many forms of industrial labor racketeering such as the ice monopoly racket, linen-supply racket, waterfront pier rackets , etc.

To say that Angelo kept himself busy would be a gross understatement. Suffice it to say that he was such an ambitious guy that he was up to his eyeballs in the rackets from the time he got up each morning until the time he placed his head on the pillow to sleep at night.

One of his finer moments came when he became enmeshed in what was to become an extremely lucrative racket around the Rockaway Beach section in nearby Queens County after he and his crew started shaking down local ice dealers. Their methods may have been crude and straightforward, but they were also very successful.

How they operated was to approach various targeted suppliers of blocks of ice to local homes and businesses and then demand weekly extortion payments -- or else!

At first, the naive ice dealers usually spurned the gangster's demands. But once the businessmen realized who they were dealing with, most capitulated and paid what was asked of them. The gangsters used very persuasive tactics against any resistance to their demands.

Some of these methods included incendiary and dynamite bombings of warehouses and trucks of ice dealers, physical beatings, and, on occasion -- if there was an especially real hard nut to crack -- stabbings and shootings as well.

In short order, all of Queens County’s ice dealers eventually got the memo!

The ice dealers revolt.

Angelo and his associates eventually became so entrenched in this racket that they soon decided to form a front company to better camouflage their shakedown and extortion operation.

The Queens County Ice Dealers Protective Association was established to help organize all independent ice dealers under one umbrella to more easily force them to pay what the gangsters like to refer to as monthly "association fees." In reality, this was nothing more than a levy and extortionate "tribute" of three cents on every block of ice sold.

The ice racket ran smoothly for quite some time until the ice dealers eventually banded together and revolted, cutting off the “protection” payments at an industry meeting then held while being guarded by a team of city policemen.

And down the pike, Angelo Yale and his gang of toughs were eventually charged with "ice racketeering" based on information supplied to the police by these same ice dealers and other witnesses.

The Queens County District Attorney soon opened up the first of what would eventually expand to four separate investigations into what he termed a “$2,000,000 ice racket” then operating in his county.

Helping him spearhead these investigations were members of the New York State Attorney General’s Office, as well as a legendary figure in the New York Police Department by the name of Michael Fiaschetti.

It was Fisachetti, of course, who had assumed control over the so-called “Italian Squad” after his superior and predecessor, the famous Lieutenant Giuseppe Petrosino, was murdered in Sicily in 1909 while investigating the Mafia.

The District Attorney’s Office handed out dozens and dozens of command subpoenas to various ice dealers for their testimony regarding these Mafia extortions. In addition, the D.A. also subpoenaed three of the most notorious racketeers known to the ice industry, whose victims accused them of having demanded regular “tribute” from them.

The D.A. then named Angelo Yale and two of his known associates, Ralph Ligorri and Antonio (Tony) Onzi, as the racketeers under investigation.

But despite formal criminal charges being brought against the trio -- and similar to 99% of all other criminal cases ever lodged against Angelo and his gang -- the hoodlums would eventually beat this case as well.

Here We Go Again

Months later, Yale was arrested again, this time for threatening and extorting a Rockaway Beach ice company owner. Eugene Scully and his business partner had filed a formal criminal complaint against Angelo with the police.

Unfortunately, prosecutors revealed that the two key witnesses had vanished by the time the case was set to go to trial, forcing the judge to dismiss the case.

After the case was dismissed, frustrated law enforcement sources, speaking anonymously, told reporters that this marked the sixth time in two years Angelo Yale had been arrested on extortion charges. In every instance, witnesses were thoroughly intimidated into silence, ultimately refusing to testify against him or his men in court.

Other local authorities also said they found it relatively easy to arrest Yale but extremely hard to ever convict him.

It appears that Angelo Yale was a very tough nut to crack!

In addition to the ice supply industry, the Yale brothers and their gang specialized in the systematic shakedown and extortion of various local businesses and industries over the years.

Their targets included businesses such as restaurants, pizzerias, bars and nightclubs, cafes, billiard halls, bakeries, butcher shops, delicatessens, laundries, cleaning shops, shoe repair shops, and numerous other small businesses, from little family shops to major companies -- anyone operating within Frankie Yale and his gang’s perceived South Brooklyn bailiwick was considered fair game.

Over the years, during the regular course of conducting their shakedown and extortion rackets, many members of Frankie Yale’s gang were also routinely picked up and arrested umpteen times for their activities. Typical charges ran from such pedestrian penal offenses as assault, coercion, and criminal mischief to arsons and bombings, price-fixing and restraint of trade, extortion, and murder.

Frankie, Angelo, and their men usually took it all in stride. After all, these things were only minor inconveniences and all par for the course.

In this regard, Angelo Yale and members of their gang were often arrested and charged with strong-arm extortion and related counts. But each time, the charges were eventually dropped after the victims and witnesses to their crimes refused to testify and identify Yale and his associates in open court.

But who could blame them? These poor folks feared for their lives from the underworld vengeance they knew would come if they testified against the gangsters.

A Wild Arrest Record

From the best records available to Button Guys, it appears that Angelo had already started what would eventually become a very lengthy police record by at least 1921 when he was a mere 18 years old. But because of shoddy county record-keeping practices, it’s also entirely possible, even probable, that he started his anti-social register a bit earlier.

Angelo’s criminal arrest record with the New York Police Department reads like a laundry list with nearly every crime in the book, including kidnapping, assault, felonious assault (twice), grand larceny (thrice), homicide (thrice), investigation and suspicion of murder (twice), extortion (7 times), attempted extortion (4 times), grand theft auto, defacing a vehicle identification number, coercion and intimidation, criminal mischief, vandalism, petty larceny, possessing stolen goods, armed robbery (twice), illegal possession of a pistol (twice), disorderly conduct, vagrancy (thrice), consorting with known criminals, conspiracy and counterfeiting U.S. currency (twice), with one counterfeiting conviction resulting in a 2-year prison term.

But regardless of the date he "officially" started his yellow sheet, once Angelo notched that first arrest, from that point forward, his life would be one of constant arrests, violence, and turbulence.

And despite the far-flung and seemingly wild nature of Yale’s criminal background, it appears he was also a very laser-focused guy with specific goals. Most of the pinches he took were for the ultimate purpose of moving forward within Brooklyn’s criminal underworld and gaining dominance over friends and foes alike.

So, let’s digress for a moment and take a better look, shall we?

Gangland War

Back on July 15, 1921, New York City Police reported that over twenty shots were fired from two passing automobiles that tore up a sedan in which Frankie and Angelo Yale and three associates were sitting in an attempted assassination plot.

Angelo and gang associate Rocky Lawrence were shot and wounded in the melee. Frankie and two other occupants in the car -- crew associates Dave Cannallo and Anthony Cassano -- all escaped the carnage, apparently unscathed.

Gang War!

Yale and Lawrence to Coney Island Hospital were rushed to Coney Island Hospital for their injuries. Angelo had sustained a gunshot wound to the shoulder, while his buddy Rocky got hit twice with bullet wounds to his right shoulder and left leg.

Authorities later said that the automobile the five gangsters were riding in at the time of the incident, which they said was owned by Angelo, was completely perforated by bullets. One detective likened the car to a piece of Swiss cheese.

Settling the Score

Only nine days later, on July 23, 1921, the Yale brothers settled the score when a known hoodlum out of the East Harlem area was gunned down on Elizabeth Street in Lower Manhattan’s Little Italy neighborhood.

Police reported that Silvio Melchiorre, ostensibly the legitimate owner of a Little Italy restaurant but who was widely known as a gangster, was gunned down by an assassin who snuck up behind him on the street in front of Melchiorre’s eatery as the intended victim was reportedly having a heated discussion with another man. Police came to believe this man intentionally diverted the victim’s attention so that the gunman could get within firing range.

Even though Elizabeth and Kenmore Streets were teaming with shoppers and other pedestrian traffic at that time of day, the killer boldly fired five gunshots into his victim’s head and body in broad daylight. Both assailants quickly escaped down the street, disappearing into the bustling crowd.

Side Note: Law enforcement authorities later stated that Melchiorre’s murder was part of a larger underworld conflict -- which they referred to as “The Whiskey Feud” -- and that it stemmed from gangster competition over bootlegging rackets. They also said the murders of at least twelve different gangsters had been tied to this particular underworld conflict, including that of Silvio’s brother, Ernesto Melchiorre, who had been slaughtered at Coney Island only six weeks earlier. In that bloody incident, the police said the gangster’s corpse was found with the head almost severed from the torso.

New York Homicide detectives were working on the theory that the same gang had eliminated both brothers. They also stated they had received information that the brothers may have been involved in the assassination attempt on Frankie Yale only weeks earlier when unidentified gunmen fired thirteen bullets into an automobile the Yale brothers were driving in at the time.

Shot in the Hip

Less than a year later, on the evening of June 20, 1922, Angelo Yale was standing on the corner of Sixty-Sixth Street with a group of approximately 20 men when all hell broke loose with a free-for-all gangland battle.

During the ensuing melee, the then-25-year-old Angelo was shot in the hip, and an associate of his, 39-year-old Ernest Russo, was stabbed repeatedly in the head with a stiletto. Both were rushed to Kings County Hospital.

Afterward, a police spokesman told reporters that cops responded to phone calls to the precinct about a major battle that was taking place. He went on to describe the incident this way, “About twenty men were standing in front of a building at 1478 Sixty-Sixth Street when a half dozen gunshots were fired. All the participants except Angelo Yale had fled the scene within minutes. Yale was found lying on the sidewalk by the score of policemen who we dispatched to the crime scene.”

Police found a very weak Ernie Russo in an empty lot nearby, suffering from a massive loss of blood.

Police later questioned both men, but they claimed they had no idea why the quarrel had started.

The police spokesman also said that Yale had been shot three times in another incident a year earlier, which he said appeared to be an attempted assassination. Yale had been driving Sixty-Fifth Street with a group of associates when another car pulled up alongside him and opened up with a volley of gunshots. Yale was the only one hit by the bullets.

When questioned by the cops in this earlier incident, Yale and his companions once again denied knowing who the men were who fired at them or why they did so.

In the organized criminal underworld, this practice is called "clamming up" or D & D, for "deaf and dumb" -- in the Mafia, it’s called Omertà’.

A Very Wild & Reckless Guy

On October 22, 1922, Yale, who was only 20 years old at the time, was one of eight suspects arrested on kidnapping charges after a young woman was abducted in what later turned out to be a twisted tale of young love gone awry. Police charged seven men and one woman with forcibly abducting a 20-year-old local girl named Teresa (Tessie) DeFino against her will.

According to the police, a rejected suitor named Ralph Sibbio had been pestering the young woman with his unwanted affections for over three years. The frustrated Sibbio eventually concocted the ill-fated kidnap plot to force DeFino to marry him.

Police arrested Sibbio and the other suspects, who, aside from Angelo, reportedly included Sibbio's parents and cousins, at the New York City Marriage Bureau.

Racking up those arrests!

After the arrests, an angry DeFino confronted Sibbio inside the station house, yelling, “You snake, I hate you! I went to the license bureau with you because I feared you, but I knew the courts would annul any forced marriage.”

In addition to Sibbio and Yale, police also charged Sibbio’s father and mother, James and Celestina Sibbio. Also arrested were Jerry Sibbio, his cousin, and several friends of Sibbio’s who were identified as members of Frankie Yale’s gang, including James Caponi, Joseph DeAngelo, and George Muller.

All suspects were initially held on $2,500 bail apiece at their arraignment. However, that bail was later increased to $5,000 for three defendants, Ralph Sibbio, Angelo Yale, and George Mulle, after a request from the judge by the District Attorney.

The charges were later dismissed against Yale and several others.

Hanging Around, Letting it All Hang Out

On September 24, 1923, Angelo was arrested after he crashed his expensive sedan into another automobile and injured two men and a woman who were inside. Yale, then residing at 1440 Fifty-Sixth Street, collided with another car driven by Frank Reilly at the intersection of Benson and Eighteenth Avenue.

The three passengers injured inside Reilly’s car were later identified as Frank Carroll, Walter Reilly, and Grace DeVoe.

Frank Reilly was not injured in the accident, but the other three were rushed to Coney Island Hospital, where they received medical treatment and were later released.

Side note: It appears that this Frank Reilly, of 89 Vanderbilt Avenue, was the same Frank Reilly who Yale stabbed four years later, in 1930. Yale first intentionally smashed into Reilly’s car, then jumped out of his vehicle to assault and stab Reilly. Obviously, there was a lot of prior history and bad blood between these two men and an apparent ongoing hostility and hatred on Angelo's part.

On September 16, 1924, Angelo was arrested after a uniformed policeman responded to a disturbance in a Coney Island restaurant and spotted Angelo standing next to a table with several pistols on it. He was charged with possessing revolvers without a permit.

Policeman Armando Verra of the Coney Island Precinct arrested Yale and hauled him off to the lockup. Verra then swore out a formal complaint against the gangster.

According to Verra, he had responded to a report about a fight in progress inside a restaurant at 2828 W. Seventeenth Street. When he entered the eatery, Verra’s attention was immediately drawn to Angelo Yale standing next to a table with two revolvers on it. Verra said that approximately fifteen other unidentified men were also in the eatery at the time of the incident but escaped by running through a rear exit just as he was entering the establishment.

Yale was held for arraignment before Magistrate James T. O’Neill, who ordered Yale to jail instead of letting him post up $1,000 bail. The jurist also ordered Yale to face a criminal examination on the charges the following day.

What is it with Angelo and Cars?

On July 10, 1926, while speeding down a side street, Yale struck a 6-year-old Mildred Goldstein, who was playing in front of her house at 2854 W. Nineteenth Street.

Although struck by the hood of the automobile and thrown onto the curb, she was only grazed by the car. Police later reported that, miraculously, Mildred had only suffered several cuts and bruises from the accident.

At the time, Yale lived several blocks away, at 2850 W. Fifteenth Street. Police said he was driving at such a high rate of speed for a quiet residential street they suspected he was possibly trying to elude the cops or his enemies.

Frankie Meets His Maker

After numerous attempts on his life over the years, the notorious Frankie Yale was finally gunned down while sitting behind the wheel of his automobile. It happened right off the corner of Ninth Avenue and 41st Street on July 1, 1928. His killing marked a change in the underworld guard, so to speak.

Thereafter, most of his men continued running the gang until they moved on to greener pastures. Over the next several years or so, some of his top men would eventually be absorbed into the Mafia, which by that time had morphed itself into a blended organization of not only other Sicilians but also Neapolitans and Calabrians. This new organization called itself Cosa Nostra -- Our Thing.

As for Frankie’s kid brother, besides “inheriting” his brother’s funeral parlor interest, Angelo also inherited several other legitimate business interests and the many racket interests Frankie had controlled and operated in Brooklyn and Manhattan before his untimely demise.

The Laundry Extortion Racket

On January 30, 1929, New York Police formally charged Angelo with heading a so-called "laundry gang racket" that terrorized laundry businesses around the Bath Beach section of Brooklyn over six months.

He and four members of his gang were charged with grand larceny in connection with the theft of a laundry truck and its contents from a company owned by businessman Lawrence Zigardo.

Besides Yale, the others arrested were identified as Ruby Ruvriani, Frank Losaro, William Ursino, and William Ayn. Police said the arrests followed the discovery of a load of stolen laundry hidden in a garage at Losaro’s home. Yale was charged after the police found a car registered to him in the garage.

Authorities said the empty stolen laundry truck was found abandoned nearby, at 68th Street.

According to Zigardo, his truck and supplies were stolen after an extortionist demand by the gangsters for $1,000.

The Whack-y Thirties

In 1930, Angelo was arrested for the "knifing" of three young men in the Coney Island area, two of whom were very seriously injured. Eyewitnesses told the police that the stabbings were the result of a wild early-morning brawl that threw area residents of the neighborhood into a panic.

Onlookers identified Yale as one of several persons who escaped from the scene in an automobile immediately following the incident.

The three victims, all in their mid-twenties, were identified as three Irish boys, John Doherty, David McMullen, and Frank Reilly.

Police reported that McMullen was stabbed in the back, and the wound so severe, they feared he might not survive. The other two men were less seriously injured, although Doherty did sustain a nasty injury to his right chest.

A violent night!

Although eyewitnesses reported that the fight began in a bungalow where the suspects and victims had gathered, all three young men later told police they didn’t know the identities of the people they had argued with. This, even though they had entered a sedan with their assailants shortly before being stabbed by those same unnamed individuals.

However, acting on other information supplied by eyewitnesses and police informants, Brooklyn detectives said they immediately initiated a search that extended into the underworld haunts of Brooklyn and Manhattan for several key suspects. Detectives later identified Angelo Yale as one of the men who escaped from the scene in an automobile.

Eventually, the entire case against Yale was dismissed after none of the alleged stabbing victims even appeared in court to testify about the bloody incident.

Yale went on his merry way, free as a Jaybird once again!

By the end of the following year, December 1930, however, Angelo was finally convicted of criminal charges, albeit on a simple petty larceny charge. But the judge did order him to spend 30 days in the county lockup.

Later that same month, on December 14, 1930, Yale got arrested again before he started serving his thirty days. This time, it was for the illegal possession of a handgun after local policemen staged a raid on his undertaking business.

After searching the premises, police found a fully loaded revolver in the top drawer of his office desk.

During questioning, Yale admitted ownership of the handgun, telling officers, “Yeah, that’s mine. I keep it here to protect myself. After all, only last month, you guys know that gunmen drove past my business and strayed the place with machine-gun fire.”

He was immediately arrested and later held on $500 cash bail.

Caught dead to rights, Angelo was later sentenced by the Court of Special Sessions to serve another 30-day jail stretch in the City Prison Workhouse in addition to the month he received for petty larceny.

Side Note: It is interesting to note that during his sentencing, the courtroom was reportedly packed with dozens of Yale’s hoodlum associates and minions. A special force of detectives was assigned to be on hand inside and outside the courthouse to prevent any possible demonstration or violent outburst from his band of loyal followers.

A Life Full of Death

In 1930, Angelo was one of four known hoodlums arrested by Brooklyn detectives for the gangland-style slaying of Raffaele (Ralph) Bruzzese, who had been found shot to death the previous evening. He was lying on the sidewalk in front of 225 64th Street.

Yale and his associates, who police identified as Vincent Sebastiano, Anthony Dacunto, and Dominick DiMartino, were arraigned the following day in Brooklyn Homicide Court. Authorities said each suspect pleaded not guilty and were detained without bail pending a criminal examination hearing.

But, as was typically the case with gangland murders, the judge was forced to dismiss the case based on a lack of eyewitnesses and other evidence. Angelo and his pals walked out of the courtroom again with big smiles.

Shortly after, on March 24, 1931, Angelo and one of his top men, Gaetano "Tommy" Sorrentino, were arrested on felonious assault charges. These charges were later upgraded to murder after rival mobster Cataldo "Eddie" Grimaldi died from gunshot wounds he sustained a few days earlier.

Police said that five shotgun slugs hit Grimaldi as he stood on the corner of New Utrecht Avenue and 65th Street in Bath Beach. The assailants' bullets struck him in the neck, shoulder, and lower back.

When questioned at the hospital by homicide detectives, the Grimaldi refused to identify the perpetrators, telling the officers he had his back toward the street and didn’t see the gunmen.

But bystanders later told police that while standing on the sidewalk, Grimaldi was hit five times after being peppered with machine-gun fire from a slow-moving vehicle. They told the cops that four gunmen opened up on him from inside the car.

Grimaldi collapsed to the pavement but then was able to get to his feet and stagger two blocks to New Utrecht Avenue, where he collapsed for the last time. After passersby discovered him bleeding to death on the sidewalk, he was rushed to United Israel-Zion Hospital.

From his hospital bed, Grimaldi told detectives that an attractive girl had been used as a decoy to lure him to the street corner, where he was shot under the guise of meeting the young woman for a “date” they had made. That was when other gangsters repeatedly shotgunned him.

Murder and Mayhem!

The reportedly dapper sheik-like would-be boss of Frankie Yale’s former territory quickly found out that he wasn’t taking over anything. All Grimaldi would repeatedly say to police as he was gasping his last breath was, “And I thought that dame was on the up and up.”

When Police Captain John Ryan asked her name, Grimaldi refused to speak. When asked who had shot him, the dying mobster said, “Who was it that gave me the works? I don’t know.”

Police didn’t really expect Grimaldi to “put the finger” on his would-be killers or squeal on the woman who tricked him into meeting her on that fateful corner, but they had to ask him nonetheless.

Underworld informants later told detectives investigating the Grimaldi homicide that Eddie and his brother Fiore had been attempting to wrest control of some rackets formerly controlled by Frankie Yale.

Yale was quickly picked up by the police and taken to the station house for questioning. He was repeatedly grilled regarding Grimaldi’s murder, both before and after being officially booked on first-degree homicide charges.

But because of a lack of hard deviance, once again, Angelo was eventually released from police custody.

Eddie’s murder was thought to have been Angelo’s deadly response to the Grimaldi brothers' efforts to steal from him.

Side Note: Several months before his own murder, New York City Police Detectives had arrested Eddie and his brother Fiore in the bloody gangland killing of another top Brooklyn gangster named Vincenzo (Big Jim) Sabatino. A known Grimaldi rival, the previous December 19th, Sabatino’s bullet-riddled corpse was found slumped behind the wheel of his automobile at 88th Avenue and 107th Street in the Ozone Park section of Queens. But at their later arraignment of murder charges, the judge hearing the case against them declared the evidence presented was insufficient and then dismissed the case against both Grimaldi brothers.

The Envelope, Please!

On August 5, 1932, Angelo and an accomplice, John Freeman, were arrested by Brooklyn detectives and charged with the May 4th attempted extortion of $1,500 from businessman Abraham Brooks, owner of a local ice cream parlor at 1552 62nd Street.

But later, during a police lineup of suspects, Brooks was unable, or, more appropriately -- unwilling -- to identify either man. The police were reluctantly forced to drop all charges against Yale and Freeman.

But Brooklyn Assistant Chief Inspector John J. Sullivan was so pissed off by the outcome of this latest failed attempt to jail Yale that he confronted the wily racketeer and stated ominously, “You know you’re long overdue, don’t you?

He added, “They’ll be picking your body up from the curb someday if you don’t watch your step.”

Then, further incensed by the hood’s seemingly laissez-faire attitude, Sullivan continued his verbal assault, asking Yale, “What kind of a deal was that? That you were trying to pull over there?”

“I wasn’t trying to put over any deal,” Yale replied. “I simply drove Freeman there but didn’t know what Freeman went there for.”

Yale’s denial only provoked Inspector Sullivan even further.

“I’ll tell you,” Sullivan said, his face flushed and his voice elevated to yelling (according to witnesses). “I’ll tell you what you went there for. You went in there to shake down this poor man for conducting a business within your bailiwick.”

Unable to contain himself, Sullivan repeated his verbal warning to the gangster, “You have a neuritis of the neck from looking all around and behind you. To your right, to your left. Your head’s like a merry-go-round.”

Sullivan then repeated, “Like I said, you’re long overdue. And someday, the Board of Health wagon is gonna take you away!”

On August 28, 1931, Yale was arrested in Brooklyn for an armed robbery he allegedly committed the previous year. He was accused of having robbed Herman Beck of $204.25.

During the arraignment for this latest criminal excursion, Yale appeared without a lawyer and refused to utter a single word in court. The judge subsequently held him on a whopping $23,000 bail bond.

At the same time, a previous arrest warrant was dismissed, charging mobster Carmelo (Charlie Bananas) Coppolino, a Yale associate with the same robbery. Coppolino was set free.

On October 25, 1932, Angelo was arrested yet again. He was accused of the extortionate shakedown of another local Brooklyn businessman.

Not interested in talking!

But in a seemingly never-ending theme, no sooner did the case come to court than the original complainant, Andrew Rodgers, withdrew his prior statements and refused to testify about the alleged extortion incident.

Through the years, the New York City Police discovered that it was a typical and oft-played-out scenario in criminal cases brought against the wily gangster.

Rodgers was part-owner of a secondhand automobile lot at 1157 Coney Island Avenue. He refused to testify on the grounds of self-incrimination, although he had previously told detectives that Yale threatened to “cut his throat” if he stopped paying Angelo $10 for each car sold.

After Rodgers refused to talk to authorities, the judge had no choice but to throw the case out of Flatbush Criminal Court and release Yale.

But simultaneous with the dismissal, Magistrate Liota immediately held Yale on a short affidavit and ordered him to go to Brooklyn District Attorney Geoghan’s office for further questioning and investigation into those same extortion allegations.

An Unsavory Character

In 1933, the New York City Board of Health revoked Angelo Yale’s undertaker's license. It refused any renewal on the license because of Yale's criminal record. This revocation greatly impeded his ability to operate his Uliano & Yale Funeral Parlor..

On November 29, 1932, Angelo and two accomplices were arrested on charges of assault and suspicion of murder after Betty Smith swore out a complaint against them.

Smith alleged that the previous day, the men forced their way into her home by placing a revolver in her ribs. After entering, they began looking for a man only described as “Chick” Abruzzo. Once they realized Abruzzo wasn’t there, they immediately left. One hour later, Abruzzo’s body was found murdered in the street.

Police later said that two unidentified men with whom Abruzzo was seen just before he was killed had suddenly disappeared from the area right after the slaying.

Side Note: By August 1932, Angelo had been arrested at least 23 times. Many of these offenses involved crimes of violence, including multiple felonious assaults and more than a few homicides.

During that same year, both Brooklyn patrolmen and plainclothes detectives were once again warning Angelo nearly every time they bumped into him that he would eventually end up in the gutter as well.

Loitering and Other Pastimes

In early 1933, Angelo was arrested in Coney Island along with eight others on vagrancy, loitering, and "suspicious character" charges during a roundup of local underworld figures and other undesirables.

Police Captain John J. Ryan later said that the 34-year-old Yale was picked up along with a buddy, 38-year-old James Vastoli, at the corner of Cropsey Avenue and Bay First Street while he and his detectives were prowling around looking for underworld characters who had not heeded a police department warning to leave the Coney Island area.

After questioning Yale and Vastoli for over an hour, Capt. Ryan dispatched two men also to pick up another couple, a husband and wife team named James and Josephine Avitable. All four suspects were then charged with armed robbery for taking $250 from Arthur Shannon during a gunpoint holdup two months earlier.

Later that year, on October 2, 1933, Yale appeared in a police lineup after he was charged with extortion on the complaint of John La Blanca. La Blanca told police he had given Yale $50 because he feared for his personal safety. Angelo was accused of strong-arming the man.

After his arrest, detectives reported that Angelo was quite candid in his replies to the questions of Acting Deputy Chief Inspector Henry Bruckman.

Yale stated quite emphatically, “Yeah, I took it. I needed the money to give to a lawyer.” But the seasoned hoodlum then declined to offer any further explanation.

In January 1934, police picked up Yale and two associates and charged them for consorting with known criminals -- each other. But the magistrate threw the case out of court and admonished the policeman and the prosecutor for wasting the court’s valuable time and resources on such trivial pursuits.

On February 19, 1934, while driving his car, Yale is stopped by Police Detective William Dunne from the Coney Island Precinct. After questioning his suspect, Dunne arrested Yale for auto theft and grand larceny after the description of the car Yale was driving matched that of one reported stolen several days earlier. When police checked the vehicle identification number, they noticed it had been defaced and altered.

Yale was subsequently charged with auto theft, grand larceny, and defacing a VIN serial number.

At his arraignment, Yale tried making the weak case that he was unaware the vehicle was stolen, stating that he had only ‘borrowed’ the car from an unnamed woman whom he refused to identify.

On June 21, 1934, city detectives arrested Yale in Rockaway, Queens, and arraigned him on extortion charges the following day in Queens County Criminal Court. Eugene Scully had accused him of attempting to extort money from him.

Scully, owner of a local ice distribution company, swore out a complaint stating that Yale had threatened him after he repeatedly refused to pay Yale $50 for the protection of his business.

Yale was later released on $5,000 bail to await trial.

Authorities said that Yale, who was later indicted on additional extortion charges by a Queens County Grand Jury, was believed to be connected with the underworld’s ongoing “ice protection rackets” which they said were still being investigated by the office of District Attorney Charles C. Colden.

That same year, 1934, New York City Police rounded up 109 hoodlums in a countywide dragnet coordinated to suppress the hoodlum element. Yale was charged with assault and robbery, while most of the others arrested were hit with consorting with known criminals.

Ten suspects were additionally charged with possessing policy slips or promoting gambling after a raid on the Spinola Club, a private mob-social club located at 171 Montrose Avenue in the borough’s Greenpoint section. Police reported that 75 men were detained after the raiders discovered card games and gambling in progress inside the club.

Also nabbed in this dragnet was James Capone, who police said had a record of 14 arrests and was a former close aide to Angelo’s brother, Frankie Yale. Others arrested included future Colombo Family bigwigs, Cassandro (Tony the Chief) Bonasera, his partner, John (Johnny Bath Beach) Oddo, and their close buddy, future consigliere Salvatore (Sally the Shiek) Mussachio .

Just two days before Christmas Eve on December 22, 1934, Angelo was arrested for extortion yet again. Yale crew member Dominick Pagnotta faced charges as well.

By this point in his long and seemingly non-stop criminal career, among other offenses, Yale had already been arrested for extortion or attempted extortion on at least ten different occasions. By our count, this was believed to be his eleventh arrest on such charges.

This time around, the hoodlums were accused of having extorted $200 from Brooklyn restauranteur Sam Mannoleli.

Mannoleli told police that Yale and Pagnotta had come into the restaurant he ran at 6225 16th Avenue and tried to extort $200 from him. But Mannoleli said he only paid Yale $15 of the sum demanded.

A few days later, the front windows of his restaurant were broken.

He also told police that before he could have the windows repaired, Yale and Pagnottia called him and said they would fix the glass for $200. But the restauranteur told them he could only come up with another $15. The hoods then instructed him to bring the money to a storefront at 68th Street and 11th Avenue and pay the money directly to Yale.

Mannoleli went to the police and explained what was happening. Detectives then provided him with marked money to pay his extortionists while they watched from a safe distance. Once Angelo accepted the money, he and Pagnotta were arrested. Bail for the extortion duet was set at $2,500 apiece.

But, of course, these charges were later dropped as well.

Despite the myriad of other criminal rackets he exercised his prowess in over the years, it's clear that Yale’s favorite -- his absolute favorite -- criminal pastime was extracting the hard-earned money from the pockets of his chosen victims and placing those same funds into his pocket.

Angelo Yale was an unrepentant camorrista and extortionist if ever there was one. He seems to have been quite proud of the fact, too!

Funny Money

At the tail end of 1934, Angelo was arrested for counterfeiting. However, this case (like so many before) was eventually dropped due to a lack of hard evidence, so Yale went free.

Several months later, on February 4, 1935, he was rearrested, along with three accomplices, on a new indictment for counterfeiting. He was again charged with having passed counterfeit United States banknotes several times.

Charged along with Angelo were James Malvino, a 27-year-old woman named Tessie Lauria, and her brother, Pasquale (Patsy) Lauria. They were arraigned and released on varying amounts of bail. Yale’s was set at $15,000.

By the end of the year, the case had come to trial, but this time around, there would be a different outcome.

After hearing all the evidence presented to them and then deliberating, a Brooklyn Federal Jury brought back guilty verdicts against Yale and Malvino. They were both convicted of possessing and passing of counterfeit money -- bogus $20 notes. The two defendants now faced 32 years behind bars and fines of $20,000.

Yale had been specifically charged with passing counterfeit bills on at least two separate occasions.

No more funny money!

The first had been on November 26, 1934, when a fake $20 note was passed at the Beehive Service Station, 148 Flushing Avenue, in Downtown Brooklyn.

Two days later, on November 28th, another fake bill was cashed a block away at Elkins Hardware store, 198 Flushing Avenue. The proprietor, Abe Elkins, testified he dealt directly with the defendants, accepting the counterfeit note.

From the witness stand, Elkins identified Yale as the perpetrator of the crime.

Malvino was charged with assisting Yale in passing the bogus cash at the hardware store. He was also found guilty of having passed counterfeit notes at the Beehive Service Station.

The indictment against Tessie Laura was dismissed because of a lack of evidence. Her brother, Patsy, was found innocent.

On February 18, 1935, the then 35-year old Yale was sentenced to two years behind bars in a federal prison and a $1 fine. Angelo's buddy, Jimmy Malvino, was sent away for 2-1/2 years because of another charge added to the indictment.

Later, after the two were convicted and sentenced, Malvino tried making a sworn declaration that Yale had absolutely nothing to do with the counterfeiting scheme. Malvino claimed that the goods purchased with the counterfeit money found in Yale’s car had been placed there by him without Yale’s knowledge.

But the trial judge ultimately rejected Malvino’s statement, saying it was a last-ditch underworld plot to allow Yale to beat the case against him.

As Angelo eventually discovered, it turned out that the ‘funny money’ business he had long enjoyed wasn’t so funny after all.

The Public Enemy

In November 1934, the New York Police Department declared Angelo Yale to be the “Public Enemy” of New York City that he, indeed, was.

It was a long time coming. After all, just like his notorious brother before him, Angelo was a known bad guy -- maybe even one of the worst Brooklyn bad guys among a neverending sea of bad guys that Brooklyn ever had.

It was Angelo’s time to shine, if only before a police spotlight and newspaper cameras.

It was around this same time that Angelo was believed to have become a fully inducted Cosa Nostra member.

Anthony Carfano

Just as several of his buddies from their old Coney Island gang had done, Angelo followed suit. He joined up with a young Salvatore (Lucky Luciano) Lucania and the Mafia Family he headed, which was based in Lower Manhattan.

Former Frankie Yale follower Antonio (Little Augie Pisano) Carfano -- who had also reportedly joined with Luciano -- had risen to the rank of a capodecina.It is believed that Carfano may have possibly been the linchpin and catalyst for many other former Camorra gang members to join up as well.

As for Angelo, he and Little Augie had a long history together and were close friends. They were known to partner up on occasion. It’s believed that Angelo was brought into the fold under Carfano’s sponsorship, being elevated to the formal rank of soldier.

Thereafter, and for many years to come, Angelo and their fellow camorrista served as either soldiers or associates within the regime of Anthony Carfano.

Big Jerry Finally Gets His

On July 5, 1935, newspapers reported that a vicious gun battle had taken place a night earlier between rival gangsters that left one gangster dead and several bystanders wounded, one of whom was a 12-year-old boy they identified as Julius Dargenio. There were unconfirmed reports that a second boy was also wounded in the shootout, but police were unable to substantiate that rumor.

Police identified the dead gangster as Berardo (Big Jerry) Magazzero, an ex-convict who they said had only been paroled from Sing Sing State Prison three weeks earlier. They also said this was a planned gangland execution -- viewed as “a payback” -- directly targeting Magazzero.

The other man wounded was identified as Dominick DeMartini, who police say stumbled into a nearby police station and collapsed shortly after the gun battle. He had also suffered a serious gunshot to the chest.

DeMartini later told police from his hospital bed that he was just an innocent bystander walking near the theatre when the gunfire started and that he knew nothing else. But police were not completely convinced of DeMartini’s side of the story.

A police spokesman said the gun battle erupted without warning as Magazzero was standing in front of a beer garden across from Brooklyn’s Hollywood Theatre.

In a familiar theme, eyewitnesses to the shooting said that an automobile pulled up in front of the theatre, and its occupants immediately opened fire from inside. Eight shots were fired, two of which struck Magazzero in the chest. By the time police officers arrived at the scene, he was already dead on the sidewalk.

Brooklyn Police said that remnants of the old “Frankie Yale mob” were involved in the killings but would not give out any details as to who exactly was involved or the cause of the trouble. But they did say two suspects were arrested after a desperate hand-to-hand struggle with an officer who heard the shooting from inside the lobby of the theatre.

As soon as he heard gunshots, Police Officer Harry Lefwick dashed from the theatre and ran towards the gunmen’s sedan. Apparently, the gunmen’s weapons must have been empty or jammed because the officer later said they did not attempt to shoot him.

Officer Lefwick then said he fought with a man who had been clinging to the running board of the sedan, who police later identified as Benjamin Mione. As the officer grappled with the suspect, he said he had to beat Mione over the head with the butt of his service revolver to finally subdue him.

Both men were then rushed to Kings County Hospital. A police spokesman said that although Lefwick got his man, during the fight, the officer was also severely beaten himself. As for Mione, he was under police guard, and doctors said that he had probably sustained a concussion.

A second suspect, whom police declined to identify, was also taken to police headquarters for questioning.

Old Habits Die Hard

By 1938, Yale was still getting picked up regularly by the police. That year, he was charged with vagrancy and disorderly conduct.

As the years passed, Yale continued to get pulled in on occasion by the local police during various criminal investigations. But that happened less and less, compared to years past.

Angelo remained a very close friend and aide to Augie Pisano. He also remained somewhat active as a crew soldier and member of the Luciano/Genovese Family’s Brooklyn wing.

But Angelo never again regained the power and prestige he once enjoyed as a young gangster operating under his brother Frankie when the Yale brothers ruled much of the Brooklyn underworld.

It's thought that Angelo still dabbled in a few rackets like bookmaking, the numbers, and shylocking, but gone were the heady days of him elbowing his way into various businesses and taking over entire local industries at the drop of a hat.

After all, by the 1950s, Angelo was already well into his mid-fifties. He was getting older and had already exhausted much of the vim and vigor he had exhibited as a young buck.

The Finish Line

Despite having been arrested more times than most folks have hair on their head, Angelo seems to have successfully navigated through 99% of it.

With the exception of that one minor 30-day stint he did in Brooklyn’s county lockup and the two-year bid he was later sentenced to for his counterfeiting conviction -- of which he was believed to have only served approximately 15 months behind bars before making parole -- our boy Angelo seems to have really had the wings of an angel.

And unlike his unfortunate brother Frankie, Angelo had been pretty successful at ducking it all.

Despite a lifetime jam-packed with murder and mayhem and intrigue, the good Lord allowed Angelo Ioele to quietly pass away in the comfort of his own home in the borough of Brooklyn, New York, on May 13, 1965. He was also afforded the blessing of dying with his shoes off -- instead of dying in a gutter somewhere with two in his back.

It was a rare privilege for a gangster. One that Angelo had denied many other men throughout the years.

The only caveat to his demise was that this one-of-a-kind, dyed-in-the-wool gangster had only made it to the age of 62 years old.

Ioele was waked in his hometown of Brooklyn and later buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn’s East Flatbush section.

Postscript: Angelo’s father, Domenico Carmine, born in 1851, passed away at 75 on March 3, 1926, in Brooklyn. Angelo was 29 at the time of his father’s death.

Next in the lineup to meet the Grim Reaper was brother Frankie. Born in Calabria in 1893, as mentioned earlier, Frankie was the older brother in whose footsteps Angelo followed. He died on July 1, 1928. Frankie was only 35 years old. At the time he lost his dearest brother, best friend, idol, and underworld guardian, Angelo had barely turned 25 years old.

Then, fifteen years later, on May 16, 1944, it was their brother Johnny’s turn. Born in Calabria in 1892, the oldest and only legitimate one of the Ioele family’s three sons, Giovanni Ioele, passed away without fanfare in Brooklyn. He was 62 years old. Angelo was 41 years old at the time of John’s death.

Their mom, Isabella -- the Ioele family matriarch -- passed away on November 29, 1940. Born in 1858, Isabella reached the comfortable old age of 82. Unfortunately, during her hard life, she also had to suffer through the untimely death of her son Frankie.

Angelo’s first wife and the mother of his children, Concetta Jennie Piccirello, died on Sept 19, 1985, out in Port Jefferson, L.I. Born in 1902, Jennie reached the age of 83.
