Thomas (Guinea Reds) Aversa was sent to Baltimore, Maryland to plant an underworld flag for the Vincent Mangano family of Cosa Nostra.
He worked alongside another Baltimore mobster named Louie Morici, who had been elevated to serve as a “capo.” Morici had been sent to Baltimore by then-family underboss Frank Scalici to take over the city’s rackets.
Although Aversa and Morici were in control of the city’s gambling rackets, because of their small size, they weren’t able to become the dominant power in Baltimore. They ended up having to work with other local mobsters as well as Jewish gangsters which allowed them to operate in ways they wouldn’t have been able to otherwise.
The mob will always adjust to fit their needs.
