Sabato (Tommy Jr.) Milo

Sabato (Tommy Jr.) Milo was a soldier in the Genovese Family who became involved in the garbage carting industry later in life.

Sabato Milo, Jr. - aka “Tommy Jr” and “Sabby” - was born in the Bronx on August 10, 1923.

He was the only son of notorious Genovese soldier Gaetano (Tommy) Sr. and Mary Milo (nee’ Scarfuto). Besides Tommy Jr., the Milos had two daughters named Josephine and Mary.

Tommy Jr. married a local Irish girl named Ann Walsh. Together they raised three children of their own: two sons named Thomas and Patrick, and a daughter named Mary Ann (after her grandmother and mother.)

He soon bought a ranch-style home for his growing family. By the late 1950s, Tommy, Mary, and the kids were residing at 24 Huron Place, Yonkers, NY.

Milo stood about 5-feet 8-inches tall and weighed in at a solid 165 pounds. He was fair-complected, with jet black receding hair and brown eyes.

As the son of a highly respected mafioso, Tommy Milo Jr. enjoyed life from a relatively lofty perch. He and his father were mostly active in the Bronx and Westchester County where they operated bookmaking and policy rackets.

The Milos were also known to engage in shylocking activities, and the Federal Bureau of Narcotics long suspected that both Milos also dabbled in the narcotics field.

But overall, Tommy’s dad made sure to watch out for his son as young Tommy aspired to Mafia stardom.

He invested a large sum of money into the Trade Winds Motel located at 1141 Yonkers Avenue in Yonkers. Once Milo took ownership of this business, he then installed his son as its new owner-manager.

It provided Tommy Jr. with a steady and solid income by which to support himself and his wife and kids. Fatherly love at its finest!

The “protection” and tutelage afforded young Milo from his blood connections and “grooming” allowed for Tommy to largely remain without any serious criminal record.

But he did fall afoul of the law in March of 1959 when he was charged with conspiracy to make false statements on a Federal Bank Loan to obtain a building loan.

Milo later pled guilty to a conspiracy to violate the Federal Housing Act. On May 12, 1959, he received 18 months imprisonment he later served at Danbury Federal Penitentiary and was fined $3000. He had no other previous convictions.

When he wasn’t running his motel, Tommy was said to frequent several nearby eateries and watering holes including the Rio Steakhouse down the block from his motel at 1187 Yonkers Avenue and the Glenwood Bar on Riverside Avenue, both in the Bronx.

He also liked to play the ponies and could be found regularly at Yonkers Raceway.

After his father’s death from natural causes in 1959, federal authorities claimed the then 36-year-old Tommy had started to assume his dad’s place within the Genovese family.

The FBI felt certain that he had taken over control of certain rackets formerly held by the elder Milo in Westchester County. They also believed that Tommy had become a key “lieutenant” for then-Genovese underboss Antonio (Tony Bender) Strollo.

Among his other known mob associates was his uncle Louis (Bo) Milo, Tommy’s cousins, and such other Cosa Nostra luminaries as Joseph (Joe Cago) Valachi, John (Johnny Dio) Dioguardi and his brother Frankie Dio, Vincent (Vinny Bruno) Mauro , Michael (Mike Rosie) Maione, Modesto (Mickey Morris) Barra, and his two sons, Rocco (Rocky) and Joseph (Jojo) Barra.

In later years, Tommy Milo and other members of the Milo family would move into the private sanitation business in Westchester.

They initially invested money to purchase a small existing garbage carting firm to get started, and later opened up several additional carting companies under different names as they expanded their control over the industry.

The Milos were thought to have worked hand-in-glovewith other important Genovese-based mafiosi to accomplish their mutual goals such as powerhouse capo Nicholas (Cockeyed Nick) Rattenni, and soldier Tobias (Toby) DeMicco.
