Vincent (Jimmy Blue Eyes) Alo

Vincent (Jimmy Blue Eyes) Alo was an influential capo in the Genovese Family who worked closely with Meyer Lansky in the casino business in Florida. He was also very active in the Bronx and Westchester policy racket and gambling operations over the years in Florida, Cuba (pre-Castro), Puerto Rico, and the Bahamas. Vincent (Jimmy Blue Eyes) Alo was born in 1904 in East Harlem, NYC. For many years he maintained an apartment at 315 Riverside Drive in an exclusive section of Manhattan. By the mid-1940s, he was also residing in South Florida at 1248 Monroe Street in the Hollywood section.

A very fluid mafioso, he'd been known to frequent various hotels and resorts in Manhattan, Miami, Florida, Chicago, Detroit, and Havana, Cuba.

Alo was a key original member of the old Luciano-Genovese Family who was highly respected and influential. He served for many decades as a top “capo di decina” in the Family.

He was arrested early on in 1923 for robbery, gun possession, and obstruction of justice. It is believed he had served just one jail term for the robbery charge in his youth.

Jimmy Blue Eyes was very active in the Bronx and Westchester policy racket and gambling operations over the years in Florida, Cuba (pre-Castro), Puerto Rico, and the Bahamas.

He was a lifelong partner and close friend and associate of Meyer Lansky (whom it is said he watched over for the Genovese Family).

By the 1940s, Alo resided mostly in Hollywood, Florida, and maintained control of his NYC regime through proxies, acting capos. Alo would fly into NYC periodically, as required, to check on his NY interests. He had maintained an apartment on exclusive Riverside Drive.

His regime members included Battistio Salvo, Tommy, and Bo Milo, his brother Frank Alo, Matthew (Matty Brown) Fortunato, (Cockeyed Nick) Rattenni, Samuel Schlitten (a policy kingpin), and Nicholas Di Costanzo, among others.

Before the Kefauver and McClellan hearings, Alo also controlled casinos in South Florida in partnership with Lansky, Frank Costello, and other top hoodlums.

Alo was familiar with most top hoodlums in the United States.

His close associates included boss Frank Costello, Joseph Doto, Vito Genovese, Charles Bernoff, Anthony Carfano, and New York master bookmaker, Frank Erickson.

During the late 1940s to 1950s, his brother Frank and several others were indicted in a large-scale “shylock” ring alleged to have out on loan over $1,000,000. It was suspected that Jimmy Blue Eyes controlled this operation.

Alo stood 5-foot 7-inches tall and weighed 160-pounds but cut a very impressive figure. He was said to be a very intelligent, polished, and a very well-liked gentleman.

Alo may have also exerted some influence on the NY piers. Irish mob boss Eddie McGrath was said to be an intimate of Alo and a frequent companion in Florida.

Jimmy Blue Eyes died in 2001 in Florida at the ripe old age of 97, having outlived a good many of his mob contemporaries. All in all he survived and very much thrived in the mob for over 75 years.
