Vincenzo (Jimmy) Giordano: A Merciless Loanshark

Vincenzo (Jimmy) Giordano was a Colombo Family soldier serving in the regime of Sebastiano (Buster) Aloi. He was known as a merciless loanshark. Because of his strong-arm tactics and reputation, Giordano infiltrated and became a hidden partner in several businesses over the years.

Vincenzo (Jimmy) Giordano aka “Peg Leg” was born in 1903. He originally lived on Cullen Place in Brooklyn, but by the mid-1950s, he had relocated out to Suffolk County on Long Island.

Jimmy settled into a home at 72 Nehring Avenue in Babylon where he would live for many years. He also resided for years at 1055 East 14th Street in Brooklyn.

He was known to always drive a 1959 white Cadillac.

Giordano was an original “Profaci” Family inducted member.

Often misidentified as an associate, Jimmy Giordano was an Italian-born South Brooklyn “soldier” and close friend and associate of Salvatore (Sally the Sheik) Mussachio serving in the regime of Sebastiano (Buster) Aloi.

His criminal specialty was the shylock racket. Giordano was known as a merciless loanshark who could turn vicious at a moment's notice if a debtor came up short with his “vig” payment.

Because of his strong-arm tactics and reputation, he infiltrated and became a hidden partner in several businesses over the years.

Diners, meat stores, delicatessens, a dress factory, and property holdings were among the businesses that fell victim to him and his associates.

Giordano was investigated for extortion and usury by authorities and was charged in connection with extorting several small businessmen at the old Nassau Farmers Market, but it resulted in no jail time and a minor conviction.

Active primarily in Brooklyn, Queens, and Nassau/Suffolk on Long Island, Jimmy Giordano was arrested over the years on assault and robbery (twice,) extortion, forgery (twice,) vagrancy, driving intoxicated, and liquor law violations.

By early 1962 after relocating to Long Island, he was hanging at Gam Pan Chinese a restaurant on Sunrise Highway in Bay Shore on a daily basis where he based his shylock trade.

Giordano was rarely convicted except for drunk driving and violating federal liquor laws and was never jailed!

One of his top aides and assistants was Salvatore (Sally the Fish) Serrantino of 523 Richman Road in East Meadow.

Serrantino operated a fish market within the bustling Nassau Farmers Market in Bethpage where he was known as a loanshark and strong-arm man who was also known to carry around a Beretta pistol while doing weekly loan collections.
