Although bouncing around the underworld for decades, with a serious criminal record to prove it, Steve Cannone was generally not known to the general public. He was first identified as a mafia “associate” back in the early 1950s. By the early 1960s, he was documented as an “inducted” member. During the 1966-1968 period, he was allegedly serving in a capo post. And by the 1970s, he was firmly being carried by the FBI as the new Bonanno Family “Consigliere.”
And while he operated relatively low-key and under the radar in various rackets throughout the years, all that changed in 1979 with the sensational gangland execution of mob boss Carmine Galante.
